World of Warcraft “Real ID” Incoming

If you’re one of the 11.5 million World of Warcraft players, you should be excited to learn that Blizzard is implementing a new friends list management system. Dubbed “Real ID”, Blizzard wants to increase the level of interaction players have with each other. Less virtual, more reality.

The system is completely voluntary, and when players sign up they will have access to numerous features including;

Real Names for Friends: Your Real ID friends will appear under their actual names (I would be Bryce Wilson) on your friends list. You will also be able to view other Real ID friends lists to see who they have added. I would imagine that would only work similar to Xbox LIVE, in that you can only view one list at a time.

Cross-Realm and Cross-Game Chat: By using Real ID, players can engage in chat across different realms. After the launch of StarCraft II, players will even be able to connect through different games. You can also chat with opposing factions. Anyone planning to ambush the Horde can arrange for a spy to communicate with them. Sneaky sneaky.

Rich Presence: Ever wanted to know exactly where your friends are and what they’re doing? Well, thankfully, Blizzard our inner stalker and allows us to explore our creeper side with Rich Presence! Players can get detailed looks at their friends’ activity logs with only the click of a button. This would also be similar to Xbox LIVE’s “X Player is playing Search and Destroy on Countdown” system.

Broadcasts: The Horde is bearing down upon you. Spells are flying. You need reinforcements. You send out a short Broadcast to all 40 of your Real ID friends and, before you know it, the cavalry arrives. Broadcast will allow you to send mass messages or alerts to all friends, You can issue updates on the fly about things like Raids, or Clan Wars.

Friend Once, See All Characters: As soon as you become a Real ID user, you will be able to see every character your friend has made in World of Warcraft and future Blizzard games.

Keen on using Real ID? Well to get started all you have to do is send a Real ID Friend Request to another player using the “Add Friend” function in World of Warcraft. Make sure to stay tuned through World of Warcraft‘s main website, and watch out for Real ID during World of Warcraft Patch 3.3.5.
