Analyst: $249-$299 Price Range for 3DS, March 2011 US Release

Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian has said that he expects the 3DS to retail for around $249-$299.

“Nintendo’s 3D-enabled handheld device (3DS) was the largest draw at E3, and we believe it will be successful at extending the company’s leadership position in the portable market,” Sebastian said, adding that “the 3DS does not require glasses or a 3D TV to enjoy a 3D experience, which we believe will resonate well with consumers.

“We expect a late 2010 launch of the 3DS in Japan, followed by March 2011 in North America, with a price point in the $249-$299 range.”

Seems a little high to me- what do you think? $249 seems like a reasonable guess with the tech being so new, but I think it’s unlikely that Nintendo would launch at such a high price like $299. We’ll keep you updated as more info comes in.a

I’m in. But can we turn “March 2011″ into “check your mailbox, buddy”?

Whoa. I understand this thing’s high-tech here but costing the same amount as, or even more than, the Wii once did? That’s just not okay, Nintendo; let’s not get greedy like Sony here :P

Ohh.. crap thats a lot a friken money for a game system. If I get that thatll be the most money ill spend on a gaming system. I know where I can get a Wii for 150$ (which is pretty cheap) But geez expensive!

The Wii was released in 2006.

For those of us who cannot count, it has been nearly five years since then, and so the price has lowered accordingly. The 3DS hardware (and presumably the software as well) is now considerably more advanced and therefore more expensive to manufacture than the DSi was, so this price range was to be expected. It has nothing to do with greed.

If you would like to wait five years or so for the price of the 3DS to drop, then you are more than welcome to do so. Meanwhile, the vast majority of us will be enjoying our new 3D-and-wifi-enabled high-powered handheld gaming systems.
