Traditionally, a console version of a game’s multiplayer does not connect to a PC client. They operate on two different networks. Valve is looking to change that in Portal 2. As reported earlier, Portal 2 is being released for PC, Mac, PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. Valve developer Erik Johnson has released some more info on the game. When questioned on the cross-compatibility of the PS3 version with the PC version, he said it is “something the team is gunning for”. Mike Dunkle, another Valve developer, also confirmed “the plan is you will be able to play between console and PC”.
While Portal 2 is exciting, what’s even more exciting is that this could soon be applied to all of Steam’s games, including The Orange Box. Fragging people in Team Fortress 2 on both console AND PC? Yes, please.
