E310 Preview: Warriors: Legends of Troy

During my meeting with Tecmo Koei, I played several different games, starting with Warriors: Legends of Troy. A grassy pathway led my character, either a Trojan or Greek, through groups of enemies. All of the enemies looked the same in this build, and fighting them off is pretty simple. The controls are easy to use, and the stylistic choices, like splattering blood across the screen if the hit was strong enough, made me feel like I was actually taking lives.

Once I got to the last enemy in a group, a triangle would appear on him and I got to take him out in a more interesting way — driving my sword through his throat and lifting his entire body with the blade. The mini-game added into the combat felt a bit like God of War, but I’m definitely not complaining.

When I spoke to the developers for Legends of Troy, they told me that the decision to make this game was based on their love of the Iliad. They wanted to make a game out of something they loved, and hadn’t seen it done recently, so they took the initiative and started production. This began with traveling to the areas that the Iliad took place in and having everyone involved in making the game reading a copy of the Iliad, then moved onto the details, like making the game as realistic as possible. Their research proved fruitful, since the columns, lighting, and environment were very believable.

If you appreciate history, mythology, or hack-and-slash games, you’ll be happy to know that Warriors: Legends of Troy will be coming out for Playstation 3 and XBOX 360 later this year
