Sonic stuff, either." />

SEGA Celebrates 19 Years of Sonic with Mega SEGA Sale

Wednesday, June 23rd will mark the 19th birthday of Sonic the Hedgehog, designated as such by the American and European release of the blue blur’s titular debut on the SEGA Genesis and Mega Drive (fun fact: Sonic 1 wasn’t released in Japan until three days later, a fact fans sometimes exploit in “he should be Robotnik, because that’s what he was called first” arguments). To celebrate, SEGA is making like Walmart and rolling back prices on a bunch of their downloadable games and content. And it’s not just Sonic stuff, either.

Mostly Sonic stuff, yes, but not entirely.

Sale dates vary from platform to platform, and are scheduled as follows:

PlayStation Network: Tuesday June 22nd to Tuesday July 6th
iTunes AppStore: Wed June 23rd to Wed June 30th
Xbox LIVE Marketplace: Thursday June 24th, one day only!

…one day only for Microsoft? That’s pretty weak; you would think after all the collaboration between the two for Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, they would be a little tighter than that.

Oh well, it could be worse– Nintendo owners get squat.

That said, here is what you can download and for how much starting today, if you’re a PlayStation 3 and/or PlayStation Portable owner:

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing: Metal Sonic Death Egg       $7.99 $5.49
Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing: Ryo with Forklift Character       $4.99 $3.49
Sonic Unleashed Apatos & Shamar Adventure Pack       $2.99 $1.99
Sonic Unleashed Chun-nan Adventure Pack       $2.99 $1.99
Sonic Unleashed Empire City & Adabat Adventure Pack       $2.99 $1.99
Sonic Unleashed Holoska Adventure Pack       $2.99 $1.99
Sonic Unleashed Mazuri Adventure Pack       $2.99 $1.99
Sonic Unleashed Spagonia Adventure Pack       $2.99 $1.99
Sonic the Hedgehog 2006: Very Hard Shadow Missions       $2.49 $1.49
Sonic the Hedgehog 2006: Very Hard Silver Missions       $2.49 $1.49
Sonic the Hedgehog 2006: Very Hard Sonic Missions       $2.49 $1.49
Sonic Unleashed Add On Bundle       $17.94 $8.99
Sonic Racing Add On Bundle       $12.98 $6.49
Sonic Rivals 2 (PlayStation Portable over PSN)       $19.99 $13.99
Sonic Rivals (PlayStation Portable over PSN)       $15.99 $10.99
Sonic Rivals 1 & 2 Bundle (PlayStation Portable over PSN)       $35.98 $17.99

And then we have a much smaller selection for the iPhone, which is also where the non-Sonic stuff happens to be:

Super Monkey Ball       $4.99 $2.99
Sonic the Hedgehog       $5.99 $3.99
Super Monkey Ball 2        $5.99 $3.99
Sonic the Hedgehog 2       $5.99 $3.99
Streets of Rage       $2.99 $0.99
Golden Axe       $2.99 $0.99
Super Monkey Ball 2: Sakura Ed.    $7.99 $4.99

And finally, Xbox 360.  Not only do they get the shaft on the sale’s duration, but on contents, too.  Have a look:

Sonic the Hedgehog 2       $5.00 $3.00
Sonic the Hedgehog 3       $5.00 $3.00
Sonic the Hedgehog       $5.00 $3.00
Sonic & Knuckles       $5.00 $3.00

Wow, that’s kind of a punch in the gut. Sure, it’s a nice deal on those four games, but what about all the downloadable content for Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing and the like?

As one might guess, there are others who are unhappy about this turn of events as well. But by the look of things, PlayStation owners aren’t among them.

Oh, well. Happy birthday, Sonic, just the same. If Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 and Sonic Colors come through, I have a feeling the Xbox and Wii people won’t even think twice about this.
