No Water Levels or Kremlings in Donkey Kong Country Returns

It was revealed today that when Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo asked Donkey Kong Country Returns producer Kensuke Tanabe if there would be water levels in the new game, the answer was clear and to the point:

“There are no underwater stages this time around.”

Furthermore, Tanabe said the following about the water levels from previous installments of Donkey Kong Country:

“[they] felt slow… It just wasn’t the kind of gameplay we were looking for.”

Finally, when Totilo asked Tanabe about Kremlings, the main villains found in the Donkey Kong Country series, he had the following to say:

“There will be no alligators in this game,”

Long time Donkey Kong Country fans may find this news disheartening. The good news is that the game still plays like Donkey Kong Country even if these series staples are being removed.

That is disappointing. While I won’t say that every DK game needs Kremlings, sort of like how Super Mario Bros. 2 was cool with Wart instead of Bowser, or the SMLand games featuring Tatanga and Wario…

…well, we just got that in DK Jungle Beat, which is sort of like DK’s parallel to SMB2. So seeing the Kremlings back would have been very welcome.

    Next time, hopefully.

I’ll miss some of the water stages, too; the ones in the first game were kind of relaxing.
