3DS Games Could Get Performance Improvements if They Don’t Use 3D

In an interview with 3DS system producer Hideki Konno, it has been noted that the 3DS would be capable of great performance improvements if developers were to create a game without 3D capability.

When asked if there could be a framerate boost from turning off 3D, Konno said that “Developers working on the system say that if they were developing a 3DS game that didn’t use 3D, they could theoretically use the extra processing power for additional texture passes and more complex object and environment geometry, or even up a framerate from 30 frames per second to 60.”

Obviously, there’s the problem of developing a game which does not use the system’s predominant feature: “Of course, there’s also the issue of selling a 3DS game without a 3D effect,” Konno said. “Publishers would have to deal with the outcry of gamers wondering why their recently purchased game fails to have any depth even when the 3D slider’s on at full blast.”

I think a lot of gamers would be interested in this, however. As long as the game was marketed at the right people, I don’t think a 3D-less game would be a problem. Say if a Call of Duty game came out for 3DS, without 3D but looking brilliant. It would still sell loads, and there will still be plenty of games that use the 3D effect.

I think for now, games that are capable of 3D would be the best way to develop the games. I mean, the 3D IS THE MAIN selling point of the 3DS. But in the near future, games without the 3D effect can definitely work – that’s what the 3D slider is there for. :D
