Team Fortress 2 Comic Reveals Updates for Engineer

Online team-based shooters don’t need a story, right? I mean, who plays Team Fortress 2 for the story? Apparently, more people than you may think. If you’re not familiar with the game, it features the Red and Blu team facing off in endless deathmatches and other common variants of team-based shooter gameplay. The game gets a bit more tactical when you factor in the 9 different classes and their unique abilities. From the minigun-toting Heavy to the aptly-named Sniper, each class adds a lot of detail to the game.
Ever since the release of the game, Valve has consistently brought updates which add new weapons and unlockable goodies for each class. With each update also comes a video which adds a backstory to each of the different classes. Suddenly, the characters have a lot more depth and become a lot more interesting to play. Definitely one of the most unique ways to flesh out the story of a game.
Valve is continuing this slow revelation of the game’s characters now with a comic series, the first of which features the Engineer. Backstory aside, the comic teases two new upgrades for the Engineer: Australium, a golden-hued metal with special properties, and a life-extender machine (which, oddly enough, extends life). Ever-persistent players of the game have found code in the most recent update for a golden wrench which, when used on an enemy, turns them into solid gold and freezes them on the spot. We won’t ask how he did it, but one gamer even posted the below video which shows the golden wrench in action. If this is for real, it’s got to be one of the coolest (and wierdest) updates to the game yet.
Hopefully, Valve’s unique method of storytelling will continue, and TF2 will keep reaping the benefits.
