Mafia II in 3D a PC Exclusive

I’ve said many times that I’m not too crazy about the popularization of 3D in video games, but it’s always a nice option to have. When Mafia II drops later this summer, PC gamers will have the option to play the game in 3D- too bad the same can’t be said for console gamers.

Talking to CVG, 2K Games’s Alex Cox explained that it’s much easier to add 3D to the PC version of the game than it is to retrofit the console versions with 3D. nVidia provided the team with add-on hardware that would make the 3D conversion much simpler, whereas doing such a conversion with the console versions would require that it’s done manually- but that doesn’t mean console gamers are out of  luck here- with enough demand, 2K would be totally willing to add 3D to the console versions, but it’s not happening in time for launch.

I can’t imagine the demand for 3D Mafia Ii would be large, but I’d be interested to see how 3D would add to the Mafia II experience. As for the experience itself, we can look forward to getting another hands-on with Mafia II this August when a demo is released, or even when the game releases for the PS3, PC, and 360 on August 24th.
