SEGA: Sonic Colors is for Kids, Sonic 4 is for Older Gamers

While many of us older gamers are looking forward to Sonic Colors more so than Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Sega is saying it’s suppose to be the other way around.

Sega has confirmed that Sonic Colors is not intended for old school fans of the Sonic series, but instead is directed towards to 7-12 year-olds, while Sonic 4 is the game for older fans.

“We’ve got to make games that appeal to the 7-to-12-year-old which is exactly what Colours will do,” says Western president Mike Hayes, “and then we need to appeal to the core gamer, which is what Sonic 4 is doing.”

Looks like Sega wants Sonic to have two different target audiences, one that is continued to be aimed at kids, like most of the recent Sonic titles, and one that appeals to 0ld-school gamers. At E310 last month, I got some hands-on time with Sonic Colors, and it surely wasn’t just for kids. Although it may be directed at 7-12 year-olds, the time I got with the game was fun and Colors doesn’t feel like a game just for kids, but one for all gamers, no matter what their age may be.

How ironic. Mario just aims for people of any age, while Sonic is having to split things up… only to achieve the “any age” part anyway?

Still, I can live with that.

I don’t think Sega necessarily meant that Colors is just for kids and 4 is just for adults. Of course both games are for everybody, but Colors is a game that appeals more to a younger crowd of Sonic fans just in case they don’t gravitate towards 4…it might not be enough for them. Then Sonic 4 is more for the retro gamers, the guys and gals that grew up in the 90′s who aren’t necessarily fond of the new 3D Sonic titles. But if you like them both then grab both.

P.S. Sega said the story line for Sonic Colors is one that “kids and adults” can get into, so that should clear up anything about it being just for kids.
