Suicide Squad Set to Bring “Hardcore Violent” Comic Action to Gaming

When it comes to comic book-based video games, there are usually certain expectations in place. And with the exception of fare such as Watchmen or Kick-Ass, one of those expectations is that the games will be relatively tame affairs. After all, just look at what happened to Mortal Kombat once Superman stepped into the arena.
Naturally, hardcore violence is not what one would expect from a video game based on a comic set in the same DC Universe occupied by the Big Blue Boyscout and the Dark Knight. And yet, that’s exactly what Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has promised with their San Diego Comic-Con announcement of a title based on the Suicide Squad.
For the uninformed, the Suicide Squad is a group of incarcerated villains offered a simple deal by the government: perform a series of missions, and in exchange, they will gain their freedom. However, it’s not called the “Suicide Squad” for nothing, as the missions tend to be of the highly-dangerous sort, which leave little chance for survival.
As an aside, some more recent fans of the DC Universe, specifically those who watched the Justice League Unlimited animated series (from which the above image was pulled), might better know the team as “Task Force X,” due to censorship issues.
But that doesn’t seem to be an issue at all with the video game. DC Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns, described this product of their ever-expanding video game division as being “hardcore violent.” And while not all of DC/WB’s superhero titles are being based on movies (Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 being one example), it sounds as though Suicide Squad may indeed be attached to a motion picture project announced in February last year.
