Torchlight II Is Getting The Diablo II Treatment

What do we mean by that?  We mean that Runic is doing away with the one town/one dungeon formula, and opening up the game to overworlds and multiple cities!!  The news coming from Runic about this highly anticipated sequel just seems to be getting better and better.

According to Runic CEO Max Schaefer, we will be seeing open, above ground areas and multiple cities to adventure in this time around.  He wants us to get us out of the dungeons and into the adventures across a vast landscape.

“People felt a little claustrophobic with the structure–Torchlight is just one town [Torchlight] and a series of dungeons underneath. So, the obvious remedy for that is to make big overworlds and different cities,”  “So, we’re doing that.”

Also, don’t forget that Torchlight II will be featuring Co-op, a feature begged for by fans of the original game.  An MMO is not in the plan yet, however.

“The more we thought about it, we could give people what they’re asking for, and give them a nice, co-op Torchlight experience a lot faster than we could do an MMO”

I’ll take co-op Torchlight right now and wait for an MMO any day!! Good call on Runic’s part if you ask us!!

So for those of you who loved Torchlight because it played just like the original Diablo, but hated that it didn’t play enough like it’s sequel, fear not!  Runic seems to be doing everything that Blizzard did to make their dungeon crawler a better experience for all!!

Hell, at this rate we may even see Torchlight III before Diablo III :-)

The MMO is still planned, and they are contractually obligated to make one for Perfect World (their Publisher and main source of funding), but just like the first Torchlight, Torchlight II is an off-shoot of the MMO’s pre-production. We just get to play more games first.

Why don’t other companies take this strategy? Make resources you can re-use and an engine you can upgrade and then pump out a few extra games as a side effect of making an MMO. :P
