Rumor: New PSP has Touch Controls

While Sony hasn’t announced or mentioned the PSP 2 publicly, apparently a few developers were able to get a private demonstration at Gamescon this week. Several unnamed publishers have reported seeing the incomplete PSP 2, with first party games running on it.
The publishers all estimate the handheld to be roughly the same size as the PSP-3000, with a “rich and detailed” screen, but the biggest feature were the touch controls, which are placed on the back of the handheld, not on the screen. From the report, there’s a “touch sensitive area” behind the unit, on the back where the screen is; however, how games would be controlled with this input wasn’t explained.
Sony has also already supposedly settled on a business model for the PSP 2, and while they were originally considering making it disc-based, after developer feedback it’s more likely it’ll be Flash-media based, like the PSPgo. One source expects the system to be ready to launch by the end of 2011, although another said it may be at least another two years. When asked for comment, Sony told Eurogamer they don’t “comment on rumor and speculation.”
