Mortal Kombat Producer Says Street Fighter Crossover is “Inevitable”

In the early 90′s, two fighting games stood head and shoulders above all the rest: Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat. And among the fans of those titles were those who wished the two would come together, if only so that they could prove their brand of martial art was the superior fighter.
Of course, back then, it was all little more than a pipe dream, as companies didn’t tend to collaborate very much. But over time, things began to change.
Capcom’s finest clashed with SNK’s mightiest. Mega Man and Solar Boy Django fought together. Solid Snake donned the garb of Assassin’s Creed. And Sonic took his long-time rivalry with Mario not only to the Olympic games, but into the Smash Bros. arena.
Times have changed, with the latest example of this being Capcom and Namco Bandai’s collaboration to create not one, but two crossover fighting games between their respective Street Fighter and Tekken franchises.
And while all this has been going on, Mortal Kombat has taken the time to do a little soul-searching. As it turns out, Shang Tsung had it the whole time. Sneaky, sneaky. In any case, Mortal Kombat seems to have rediscovered itself, and fighting fans are liking what they are seeing from the latest in the long-running franchise which helped kick-start the need for a board to rate entertainment software.
And now? Producer Hector Sanchez of NetherRealm has told CVG that he believes that the clash of titans dreamt of nearly 20 years ago is now “inevitable.” That is, depending on how well Street Fighter X Tekken goes over.
Of course, the idea is obviously not new, and not only among fans who would love to see whether Raiden could withstand the Raging Demon long enough to perform a Fatality on Akuma. Series co-creator Ed Boon had originally pitched the idea over ten years ago.
Naturally, there are some issues to contend with in mixing the T-rated Street Fighter with the proudly M-rated Mortal Kombat: “Obviously there are problems with that,” Sanchez noted. “I’m not sure Capcom would be happy with Scorpion ripping Ken’s head off.”
While that may be the case, they did manage to reach a compromise when working with the DC comics universe. Would it be so hard to do so once again? Or might Capcom remove the kid gloves and let them all duke it out to their very death?
