Alien Swarm Gets AI Director and New Difficulty Mode

Valve, being the kind souls that they are, have updated the free game Alien Swarm today with a handful of new features- which include “Onslaught” mode, which adds an AI director similar to that of Left 4 Dead. The director will ensure no level is the same twice.

They’ve also added a much harder difficulty mode (which even the dev team can’t beat)- suitably named “Brutal”. Great for those players who waltzed through the hardest difficulty with a bit of teamwork.

If you really think your team is up to scratch, you can now try out the “Hardcore Friendly Fire” toggle. This means that “friendly fire deals full damage immediately, flamethrowers set teammates on fire much faster, and turrets will hurt you if get caught in their crossfire.”

Valve have also added 3 new IAF Promotion Ranks: Platinum Star, Osmium Star, and Iridium Medallion, for those players who really can’t get enough of Alien Swarm. The patch will automatically apply when you restart Steam.

It’s great of Valve to update Alien Swarm already. It’s a brilliant little game, and it’ll last you surprisingly long for a free game if you’ve got some dedicated mates to play with- and now it’s going to last even longer.

Alien Swarm is currently doing very good indeed, and I personally think Valve did, or rather its community did very good by making more tactical games like this and its more official causin Left 4 Dead (2).

The AI however leaves much to be desired, as a lot of aliens are often spawned in walls and floors with Onslaught turned on, so the AI Director is not as good as that of its causin, again, Left 4 Dead (2).
