Lost Nintendo Games Volume 5. Project H.A.M.M.E.R.

Lost Nintendo Games is a series of articles about Nintendo games that have been lost to Nintendo fans. This usually means that the game has been canceled or the game was just not released in a particular region for whatever reason. Let us not forget about the Nintendo titles that many people never got to play.

Project H.A.M.M.E.R. was one of the first Wii titles shown off when Nintendo first announced the Wii’s software lineup at E3 2006. It is, in fact, the second Wii game that I ever played.
The story line in Project H.A.M.M.E.R. is somewhat typical. Crazy killer robots have started to attack various cities in the United States and nothing can stop them. Players then take the role of one of Project H.A.M.M.E.R.’s cyborg prototypes, M-09, in an attempt to fight back against these robots.

Project H.A.M.M.E.R. seemed to be nothing more than a modern beat’em up game. There was nothing wrong with that though as I found the game to be somewhat fun. Using the Wii Remote to swing M-09’s giant hammer around to smash enemies was surprisingly satisfying.
In 2007 rumors started to surface that claimed that Project H.A.M.M.E.R. was on indefinite hold and Nintendo confirmed that later in the same year. At the same time, however, Nintendo of America’s head of Public Relations, Beth Llewelyn, said that the game might come back in the future.
At this point all seemed lost for Project H.A.M.M.E.R. Then another rumor about the revival of the game surfaced in the Fall of 2007. It was said that Claude Comair, the CEO of NST (Nintendo Software Technology) and the founder of DigiPen, mentioned in a talk with DigiPen students that he was currently working on Project H.A.M.M.E.R.

Despite all of these rumors very little has been mentioned about Project H.A.M.M.E.R. since. Nintendo Software Technology has done very little Wii game development after Project H.A.M.M.E.R. and has been primarily been working on Nintendo DS software. It’s a shame because I felt that Project H.A.M.M.E.R. was a Wii title that had some potential and I know I’m not alone. Several other people who played the demo felt the same way. It now seems like Project H.A.M.M.E.R. is doomed to become another Lost Nintendo Game.
