PSP2 Real and Alive In The NetherRealm?

While the PSP has been successful, the PSP Go seemed to be one of those systems that was ahead of its time.  Many people felt trapped by its lack of UMDs, so Sony came up with a solution quite quickly: the PSP2.

NetherRealm Studios (Mortal Kombat) says that they have a PSP2, but haven’t been able to get their hands on a 3DS. While the 3DS was playable at E3, the fact that a studio can get a PSP2 to experiment with before they have access to a 3DS means that Sony might be ready to launch the PSP2 earlier than expected.

According to industrygamers.com, Executive MK Producer Shaun Himmerick said,

“We’re not launching day one on all consoles like that. We are looking at them; we have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support. Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We’re definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine. We don’t have a 3DS system in house yet, but we’re looking to get one, and we’ll certainly look at what its power is.”

Considering how disappointing the PSP Go was, there’s plenty of room for Sony to improve on their last portable system.  Here’s to hoping it’s as powerful as they say, and that we can play Mortal Kombat on it!!

We interviewed NetherRealm at PAX as well, but unfortunately nobody asked them about handheld systems :-(
