Angry Bird Developers Angry at Microsoft
Rovio, the makers of the hit iPhone title Angry Birds have expressed their anger at Microsoft. During a Windows Phone 7 conference, Microsoft used an icon representing the title in promotional material for its Windows Phone 7 platform without permission from Rovio.
“We have NOT committed to doing a Windows Phone 7 version,” a tweet from the developer read. “Microsoft put the Angry Birds icon on their site without our permission.”
However, in what could be quite a telling addition later in the day Rovio added:
“[It has] nothing to do with if we do or don’t [release the game on Windows Phone 7], it’s just that we decide that ourselves.”
Microsoft later confirmed that the image was created by error, telling TechFlash:
“It appears information was mistakenly posted to Microsoft’s website, and has been removed.”
It’s not hard to see why Microsoft would want to announce Angry Birds for Windows Phone 7. A Windows phone needs popular iPhone titles to compete and be relevant. In August, Rovio boasted it had sold 6.5 million copies in the iTunes Store alone. The Angry Birds franchise is spreading like wildfire and is in the works of creating plush toys and possibly getting its own TV show.
