Valve Announces DotA 2

Defense of the Ancients, a Warcraft 3 mod that has enjoyed immense popularity since its creation, is getting a full blown sequel from Valve, creators of Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, and other beloved series.

The sequel was rumored a while back, but now we know that DotA 2 is coming to PC and Mac in 2011. It promises to “take the unique blend of online RTS and RPG action that has made DotA popular with tens of millions of gamers and expand upon it in every way. ”

The game will bring back all 100+ characters from the original game and also a new coachcing system which reward veteran players for helping new players get acquainted with the world of hardcore strategy RTS gaming.  This may cut down on the in game, “douche-baggery” that games like League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth are so well known for.

Valve isn’t actually calling the game “Defense of the Ancients 2,” but rather the much simpler “DotA 2,” as displayed in the press release.

I have nothing but faith this will be a great game, but I’ve not played DotA, only a clone or two- although I did enjoy them a lot.
