Activision Has No Plans for Social Gaming Experiences

Hate him or love him, Bobby Kotick is a rich rich man, and also in charge of perhaps the biggest entertainment company in the whole world, however he isn’t keen on taking the company to new social levels. At the recent Reuters Global Media Summit Kotick told attendees “We don’t view the (iTunes) App Store as a really big opportunity for dedicated games”. This is despite companies like EA, Capcom and Ubisoft publishing games on Facebook and the iTunes App Store, and seeing marvelous sales and new players pick up their content.

Kotick acknowledged that the social market is seeing a large surge of new users however they don’t see it as a viable business tool. Kotick commented; “It’s a different question assessing it as a business opportunity. Right now we don’t see an opportunity for us to participate in that market.”. Instead he would rather keep the communities of current franchises happy with more titles where they know they will gain sales.
