Mass Effect 2 on Playstation 3 Will Use Mass Effect 3′s Engine

The PS3 port of Mass Effect 2 due to hit store shelves this January may be more than a repackaging of a year-old game. With this game due to reach retailers in January, Xbox 360 faithful may find themselves with a bit of a console envy. This isn’t an issue of visual touch-ups anymore. Jesse Houston, producer of the Playstation 3 port, revealed this in a BioWare podcast:
We’ve actually created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and use that to make Mass Effect 2 PS3. So we took the content and the story and all the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put them in the Mass Effect 3 engine. And that‘s what we are actually delivering.
Players can expect a taste of what’s to come when Mass Effect 3 finally graces us with its presence, but what are we to do with this game? ME2 on PS3 is already shaping up to be the epitome of GOTY editions with its sleek new look and enormous helping of bonus content. We’ve learned that the comic book mission that takes place between the prologue and main story is essentially a condensed “fill in the blanks” version of the first Mass Effect. Players decide who they romanced, who lived and died, and what the hell happened to the Rachni Queen, thus resolving the issue we’ve been worried about: how are we supposed to have a complete ME experience if we’re never going to see the original game on the Playstation 3? Well, problem solved.
Let’s break it down: Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 will contain a truckload of DLC ( Lair of the Shadow Broker, Overlord, Aegis pack, etc) the playable comic/condensed ME1 , improved graphics, and the first glimpse of the Mass Effect 3 engine.
If that’s not enough to start a riot in Xbox 360 land, then I don’t know what is.
