Rockstar Reveals the Tech Behind L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire is one of the most visually pleasing games that I’ve ever laid eyes on. The 1940s architecture, period vehicles and dress, and especially the characters have gotten a lot of attention over the last few months. Team Bondi has certainly been working hard building a gorgeous game for us to dive into this spring when we’ll hopefully finally be able to get our hands on it.
One of the trouble areas for visual designers has always been character designs, particularly facial animation. L.A. Noire’s designers have promised that players will be able to read the faces of characters in the game to tell if they’re lying or not and today, the revealed the technology the team is utilizing to make good on their promise. Rockstar released an almost four minute long video detailing the amazing technology behind the game, showing that they’re singlehandedly keeping camera manufacturers in business (seriously, will an astute commenter please count how many cameras were in that bright white room?).
If you’re excited about L.A. Noire, or even if you aren’t, and you want to see how they’ve managed to pull this off, you owe it to yourself to check out this video. Watching Aaron Stanton transform into Cole Phelps is absolutely fascinating and well worth your time.
