Naughty Dog: “We Have No Limits” On The PS3

RipTen was lucky enough to catch up with Naughty Dog at the 2010 VGAs – not surprisingly,  they made some bold statements about what it’s like to be a PS3 exclusive developer.

Now, while it’s obvious that as a subsidiary of Sony, Naughty Dog would only have good things to say about the system for which they produce games exclusively – these guys (and gal) truly believe that they and the PS3 – are second to none.

Can Uncharted 3 live up to all the hype?  Will it push the PS3 farther than any game has before? Naughty Dog seems to think so – in fact they have no doubts.  Quite frankly, judging from what we’ve seen so far – I don’t think I doubt them either.

However, when I ask the team what it’s like being a PS3 exclusive developer – Co-President Christophe Balestra makes a very bold statement about developing on the platform.

Check out what they had to say when they stopped by to talk to us on the red carpet:

No limits? A bold statement indeed.

Only time will tell if Naughty Dog and Uncharted 3 will be able to reach the bar they’ve set so high for themselves – however, one thing is certain . . . they are not lacking confidence.

Check out the in-engine trailer we saw that night as well as brand new screens and direct feed gameplay footage that we posted just yesterday.

Oh, and in case you forgot – Uncharted 3 is set to hit stores on 11.1.11 (November 1st, 2011)

U sure about the game being release less than a month from now? ;)

11.1.11 is next year? It’s still 2010 . . .oh wait, are you European? November 1st 2011. To you it probably looks like January 11th, 2011.

      I’ll fix it :-)

Usually when a developer makes statements like this, you can just ignore them. But with Naughty Dog’s track record with Uncharted and Uncharted 2 on the PS3 you really can’t dispute what they say until another developer makes a better exclusive console for any system.

    • Dave Oshry

I agree, and while Christophe made a bold statement, I think that their relationship with Sony really has allowed them to push that system farther than anyone else possibly can.

even the producer looked at the other guy in a funny looking way.

Naughty Dawg are the Western version of Team NINJA

I like Naughty Dog’s confidence – I just hope they can live up to all the hype.

I think the difference between Naughty Dog and Team Ninja is that ND have earned their air of confidence, considering they’ve made undisputedly the best game this entire generation and one of the best games in the history of the planet in Uncharted 2.

As has already been said, if another developer would like to dispute what ND are saying all they have to do is make a better game, problem with that is no other developer has even come within a mile of what Uncharted 2 accomplished this generation. There hasn’t even been a game this year that’s looked or played better than Uncharted 2.

I’d first like to state that I can already tell by the screen shots and the video that it was done on a console. I wonder how the PS3 would bench with 3D Mark 11 or Unigine…

Nice to see such dedication from a group of developers who really care about making quality games.

I don’t think you guys understand what they said. They were saying they have no limits from creative standpoint, because Sony is allowing them to create what they want and they don’t have to worry about restrictions from other consoles. They don’t me that they are limitless from a technical standoint.

    • Dave Oshry

You can read into it as much or as little as you like, I think what Christophe meant is that they have no limits as to what they can accomplish this generation because of their relationship with Sony and the freedom and resources they are provided when developing for the PS3.

He said, they “don’t have to develop for another platform and take the best out of the game.” That is bold but they have the track record to back it up. I bet if they ported Uncharted 2 or God of War 3 to the Xbox they would both be crappy games. That is undeniable.

naughty dog has been exclusive since sony was invented, Just as halo is exclusive to micosoft, The diffrence here is that the ps3 trully is better than the rest at this time, Naughty dog has the wiz and creativity and professionalism to actually devote years into developing a game for the playstation 3, As where most other cross platform developers are actually lazy and use excuses for why there games suck on our system, such as the ps3 is too difficult to program for, well we are talkingt about naughty dog, they started with basic graphics and always a fun story and gameplay factor, and this obviously evolved along withj the new generation of gaming platforms, specifically the ps3. so to other developers, exclusive or not, get ur head in the game and take some notes, u just might learn how to handle the power of the playstation
