RipTen Review: chick chick Boom (WiiWare)

I have to admit before giving chick chick Boom a try I was a bit skeptical. I had no idea what to expect from this title, but developer tons of bits sent me a copy to review – so here goes:
The main idea behind chick chick Boom is that two teams of chicks are trying to destroy one another. Before players jump in they get to pick from several different teams, many of which are unlockable. These different teams don’t do anything special during the gameplay but instead change the chicks cosmetically to look like Vikings, Pirates, and more.
Once teams are picked the game starts. Players will take turns launching attacks at each other’s half of the arena in an attempt to completely destroy the opposing team. Once it’s a player’s turn they will have a set amount of time to choose between three attacks, a bomb, a weight, or a piranha plant. After the attack is picked players then have to draw out the shape of the attack item in a connect the dots style game. The faster the attack is drawn the more power that attack will have.
If players draw the object fast enough they will have other options to help upgrade their attack further. A target will move around the bottom of the screen that the attacker can then shoot at. If they hit the green area it will be moderately upgraded, if the red is hit the player will then earn the ultimate version of the attack.

Once the attack is launched the defending player will then have a chance to defend the oncoming attack. Defending attacks is done through the use of ink, which each player has a limited amount of. This ink is used to draw lines to keep attacks away from the chicks. Ink can also be use offensively. The attacking player can draw lines on the defending players side that make it so the defending player can’t draw through them.
While the game is turned based there are some attacks that can happen randomly. These attacks are determined by the chosen arena and include Lightning Bolts, UFO’s, Ghosts, Sea Creatures, etc. When a special attack comes up players can click the special attack button but then have to race one another in another connect the dots style game to see which player earns the special attack. Only the fastest player will get it and these attacks can really turn the tide of a battle.
There are also power ups that are given out through a Piñata. After both sides have taken enough damage a Piñata will fall on the fence. Players can then shoot at it trying to get the Piñata to land on their side. Once it hits the ground the Piñata will break open and give out a power up. These include helmets to increase a chicks defense, a nurse cap to help heal chicks, and downgrades to make it harder for opponents to draw in the connect the dots style games.
One other power up is Corncobman. Corncobman is an ear of corn with a face that will occasionally appear in an arena’s backbround. Players can then shoot at this character knocking pieces of corn off him that will land on the shooters side of the fence. The corn will restore a chicks health and a players ink supply.
As far as the multiplayer is concerned chick chick Boom is a ton of fun. My sister, who initially thought the game looked lame, quickly admitted how much fun the game was once she started to play.

The main problem with chick chick Boom is the single player. There are a few single player modes and playing these can unlock different teams to choose from, but it just isn’t enough to make players care. The single player is just boring and why there isn’t some kind of campaign or arcade style mode is beyond me. The game could have really used it.
My only other minor complaint is that the game could have used a variety of methods to help upgrade attacks. Maybe the connect the dots style of upgrading would be good for one attack, but why not vary it up and make a different game for each type of attack? The same goes for the target style extra upgrade mini game that happens when players do well in the connect the dots style games.
While the chick chick Boom may have its shortcoming it is still is a ton of fun. If anyone is looking for a great WiiWare multiplayer title look no further. chick chick Boom is a great multiplayer title and for only 800 Nintendo Points players can’t go wrong.
Here’s The Rundown:
+ Great Fun
+ Great Multiplayer
- Lacking Good Single Player
- Attack Mini Games Aren’t Varied
