Face Raiders (3DS Pre-installed) Impressions

Face Raiders is a fun, but simple, title that will come pre-installed on every Nintendo 3DS system.  The first thing players must do is to take a picture of their face with the inner camera on the 3DS.  When doing this it’s important to line up two dots (representing eyes) and the line (for your mouth) with your own eyes and mouth on screen.

Once this is done players will have a chance to make minor adjustments before the game begins.  In Face Raiders, images of the player’s face appear wearing helmets and will attack.  The objective is to shoot them.  To aim players must physically move the 3DS around and search for the enemy faces.  The game will, however, use arrows to tell the player what direction to turn in to find the enemies.

The faces morph depending on what is happening.  They may look angry at times, laugh at the player, look as though they are in pain, etc.  It’s funny to see this happening and reminds me a lot of the Game Boy Camera’s mini games.

In addition to enemy faces, players will notice their real life environment is projected onto the background in the game.  Sometimes enemies crash through this background, other times they hide behind it.  It’s like a wall of the location that the player is really in.

At a certain points players encounter enemy bosses.  The first stage boss was defeated by shooting a purple stationary sphere, knocking it into the boss.

More powerful weapon options include a bomb power up that does more damage and hits a wider area.

There are multiple levels featured in Face Raiders that get more difficult and offer different enemies as they progress.  I noticed a later level asked players to take a picture of someone important to them, which will get friends in on the action as well.  The game also features a high score list for each level so there will be replayability

Once again Face Raiders will be a free game built into the 3DS hardware.  This will be a great title to show off some of the unique features of the 3DS to friends!
