Pilotwings Resort (3DS) Impressions

It has been almost 16 years since the last Pilotwings game was released – It’s about time that the franchise made a comeback. Pilotwings Resort takes place on Wuhu Island. This is the same island that can be found in Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit, and Wii Fit Plus. It’s miles away from ordinary.
One of the cool features of Pilotwings resort is the ability to use your Mii characters. This means that players can put a virtual version of themselves in the drivers seat and it’s pretty fun to do so.
The demo I played yesterday offered two modes, Free Flight and Mission Mode. Free Flight mode let players explore Wuhu Island with a set amount of time. The objective in this mode was to find as many special locations on the island as possible before time ran out. There is a similar mode in Wii Sports Resort. Mission mode challenged players to fly through a set of rings around Wuhu Island followed by landing the chosen vehicle.

The Pilotwings Resort demo also offered three different vehicles. Players had the choice of a Plane, Rocket Belt, and a Hang Glider. Each vehicle controlled differently, but my favorite was definitely the Rocket Belt.
While playing the Mission Mode with the Rocket Belt, players had to not only fly through rings, but also had to gently land on targets. Landing on the center nicely awarded players with more points just as in previous iterations of the franchise.
Pilotwings Resort has a lot of potential and I don’t think we’ve seen all that this game has to offer. I really can’t wait to get my hands on the final product!
