The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time (3DS) Impressions and Screens

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, at first glance, appears to just be the Nintendo 64 title with nicer textures and of course, in 3D.  It really does feel exactly like the original, but also it does have some updated features.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D demo featured three areas to play in.  A Training Area (Kokiri Forest), a Dungeon (Deku Tree), and a Boss Battle (Goma).  I played the Dungeon level and the Boss Battle.

The game features some added controls.  While using the sling shot, players could move the 3DS around physically to aim.  It’s a cool feature but one that I’m still unsure that I’d use.  Regardless, it will clearly help out new players that aren’t used to thr game, which is a plus.  This control method is optional and players can still aim with the circle pad if they so please.

I did notice one thing was missing from this demo.  In the Nintendo 64 version of the game Link is able to do an instant spin attack by rotating the control stick and hitting attack.  I couldn’t get this to work at all in the 3DS version and think it may have been removed. (Oh noes)

Other updates include a touch screen menu that will likely make selecting items easier!  This is just what Eiji Aonuma wanted in regard to the water temple and the Iron Boots.  I hope it works out in the final game and makes it easier to swap boots when necessary.

Overall Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D wasn’t a bad game by any means.  I think I just would have preferred a complete remake to a reskined game.  This will still be a great title that 3DS fans shouldn’t go without, but I hope there are some new surprises hidden within for fans like me that have played the original many times.

To be honest – re-hashed games I played when I was 12 won’t sell me on this system. WTB new IPs and games plz :-)

It’s not a system seller, unless you haven’t played it, but it’s still a nice game to have for the device.

If I remember correctly, you don’t get the spin attack until you learn it from an NPC. That could be why you weren’t able to use it, it’s just not available in the demo. Also, I’m curious what people think of the 3D effect for these games. Does it still feel like a gimmick or does it enhance the gameplay?

I just booted up OoT on N64 to validate your claim. You sir are incorrect. As soon as the player obtains the Kokiri Sword Link is able to preform an instant spin attack!

It’s been so long since I’ve played it, I wasn’t totally sure. So many Zelda games, my memory’s a bit fuzzy. I can’t see them leaving the spin attack out, since it’s been in most if not all Zelda games since A Link to the Past.

I’d still like to know your thoughts on the 3D aspect of the 3DS.

        • Justin Berube

It’s ok, I wasn’t sure either. But just to clarify, the Spin Attack was in the game, it’s just the instant version of the spin attack that I was unable to preform.

i think the spin attack has been in every Zelda game, but not 1&2. and any gameboy games i think
