The PlayStation Phone Finally Previewed and Tested – Dead Sexy or Dead on Arrival?

The Xperia play – a.k.a the PlayStation phone has finally reached the English speaking world!!  Tech sites are eating it up – and we’ve got the details for you.

Today would be a good day to work at Engadget.  The boys over at AOL’s top tech blog have their hands on the long awaited Xperia Play – and we’re going to break down their lengthy hands-on preview for ya and pretty much tell you what you actually want to know.

First off, it has a 4-inch multitouch 854 x 480 LCD.  It runs on a single-core processor inside that clocks in at 1GHz and is paired with an Adreno 205 GPU.  It also boasts 512MB of RAM and a 1500mAh battery that they say will give you about a days worth of power – which is standard for most smartphones.  Word.

Push up the screen and ta-da!  Behold the PlayStation controls.  There are touch-sensitive twin sticks instead of actual thumbsticks that obviously wouldn’t fit, and also L and R shoulder buttons.  Engadget says the controls feel a bit thin and wonky – but quite frankly – it’s a phone first and a gaming device second.

Anyhow, they installed an emulator and then booted up some familiar favorites including Ridge Racer Revolution, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, Gundam Battle Assault 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3.  Check out the video below:

Now, although the PlayStation phone is indeed quite cool - it’s not for me. I like to keep my gaming devices and phones separate.  Also, I somehow get the feeling that  the slapstick combination of these two types of tech will lead to a device that does not really excel as a gaming device or as mobile phone.  I’m not really interested in a decent phone that is also a decent gaming device.  I’d much rather have a full fledged PSP2 for mobile gaming and still carry a smartphone for business and casual mobile gaming.  Not only that, but I think you all already know what my next phone is going to be.  :-)

What do you think about the Xperia play?  Do you want one?

“I like to keep my gaming devices and phones separate”…”I’d much rather have a full fledged PSP2 for mobile gaming and still carry a smartphone for business and casual mobile gaming”….and those are the lame excuses of all the iPhone fans, is like when u play on a psp u spend hours?!, I mean I could use my psp and play 5 min levels which is the usual or do the same on my iphone playing angry birds (one of the 12 or so half decent games for it anyway), having 2 things is a pain, I don’t want to carry a back pack or a large jacket every time I go out.

I don’t usually take my portable devices out like I would with a phone. My biggest gripe with this Xperia Play so far is that it looks like a mediocre phone and a mediocre gaming device. I’d rather have something like the LG Optimus 2X that is both an amazing phone and extremely capable gaming decive that isn’t “trying” to be a real gaming device. I think there is potential for the Xperia play – but it is certainly not for me.
