RipTen Review: Legendary Wars (iPhone)

Legendary Wars is a game that impresses from the minute you start it up. The gorgeous stylistic visuals grab your attention and the addicting gameplay just keeps pulling you in. It’s that feeling of ‘one more round’ that will keep you coming back for more. The game brings a somewhat unique sense of humor to the iOS platform. The units, for example, are called Knightys, Elfys, Dwarfys, etc. and the campy story and dialogue add to the humor.

The graphics in Legendary Wars are stylistic and well done. The cartoony look adds to the overall humor of the game, and even on the retina screen, the edges are crisp and the colors vibrant. This game is a pleasure to look at, and the various characters and attacks are unique and varied. The backgrounds are detailed and change to reflect the location on the world map. Even the armory, which you’ll hop into to upgrade your units, is beautifully rendered.

Yes, that is a Unicorn. Shooting a RAINBOW.

The gameplay for Legendary Wars is somewhat difficult to categorize, as it’s fairly unique. The closest I can get is Plants vs. Zombies, but it honestly feels a little deeper than that. Typically, you’ll start off a match by buying a miner (a ‘Miney’) to collect gems, and then use those gems to purchase units. You place those units into one of three lanes, and then order them to attack, retreat, or defend. You can swap the lane that a unit occupies at any time. Meanwhile, enemies will be creating units and attacking you. Sometimes, your objective is to defend your castle from swarms of undead, or vampires, or some other enemy. Other times, you’ll have to destroy the enemy castle to complete the match. There are other various minigames mixed in between battles to vary the gameplay, but those two are the bread and butter of the game; and they work well.

Each unit, both friend and foe, has a unique look

Between battles, you can go to the armory and level up your characters with gems you’ve collected during the battle. These are things like HP, speed, attack power, etc. Once you’ve leveled a character to max stats, you have the option to move them to a second tier and start the upgrading over again. The armory adds an entire RPG mechanic and it’s fun to see your characters level up and become more powerful as you progress through the game. You can also purchase more miners or a better castle defense in the armory.

The unicorns are just entertaining.

This game is really hard to put down. I recommend Legendary Wars to anyone who owns an iOS device, really. It’s got a good sense of humor, beautiful graphics, and engaging battles with a few RPG elements mixed in. Definitely worth the $2.99 on the App Store. Check out more images after the break.
