Thought you’d seen the last original zombie based gaming IP!?  Think again. Welcome to Dead Island – an open world action/rpg zombie slaughterfest.

Deep Silver and Techland invite you to come stay at the The Royal Palms Resort.  It’s a great place for a family vacation . . . BUT THEN – blah blah blah zombie infection!, blah blah run for your lives! blah blah blah oooh check out this amazing reveal trailer:

Looks like somebody is a big fan of Memento.

Anyhow, the trailer was so amazing, our friends over at G4 just had to put it in chronological order . . . and then go and make a silly Benny Hill version for anyone who got all weepy and emotional over the original.

Behold - the Dead Island trailer going forward!

And here’s the derpy version:

But what is it all about?  Well according to Deep Silver:

Cut off from the rest of the world, only four individuals who strangely find themselves immune to zombification have the power to protect the remaining survivors from the horrors of the island, to discover what’s really going on and find a way to escape before their own fatal ends.

Dead Island will focus on 4 player drop-in / drop-out co-op first person zombie killing gameplay that aims to be much more melee focused than Left 4 Dead.

However, what aims to set Dead Island apart are it’s role playing elements and pseudo open-world gameplay.  Think Borderlands . . . with Zombies.  You know, like that Borderlands expansion . . . the one with the zombies!  Except it looks gorgeous thanks to the all new Chrome Engine 5. Also, there are lots of zombies.  Did I mention that?

You will be able to collect and customize thousands of weapons as you level up and put points into Borderlands style skill trees that will improve your skills in all sorts of different ways.  Adding to this action/rpg feel is the fast that the game world will be quite open and feature numerous side quests that will let you freely explore parts of the island.

All in all, it sounds like Dead Island has potential.  Just when the zombie genre has been beaten to death with a lead pipe – Techland and Deep Silver are looking to finally add something new.  Judging by these screens and the info we’ve got so far – I, for one, am optimistic.

Dead Island will be released sometime this year for PC, PS3 and Xbox360

RipTen will be hands-on with Dead Island in a few weeks at the GDC – stay tuned for our impressions and some gameplay!!
