If Feminists Disapprove of Duke – Pitchford Says, “Come Get Some”

Dat ass... is not offensive.
Duke Nukem is obviously not designed to be politically correct. Honestly? He’s an asshole, but that’s the basis of his appeal for most of us. Randy Pitchford, Gearbox Software’s President, is taking advantage of the “bad” press he gets from feminist cumdumpster organizations like Feminist Fatale, and using them as leverage for his game’s success …not that it needs any.
Insert Hank Hill voice here:
“I’ll tell you what, if some feminist organization that is doing a great job advocating women’s rights worldwide, which I think is really important, can get some advantage by using Duke… go for it,”
Pitchford doesn’t doubt that there are issues with the way people are treated in reality. He also recognizes that consumers have the ability to see the difference between some guy on the screen and the reality of who they are and how they treat people:
“I do know this. The game has a lot of wild fun with this, and is at times satirical.”
“One of the things that’s been brought up to me is that there’s just a random cigarette machine and one of the packs says, ‘Fags.’ What it’s doing is it’s pointing out when this word used to mean something else.
“But in fact, in our world, because these words have been converted into different words and meanings in different cultures, and because gay rights is a real issue, it is unfair.
“All of us want the same thing in this world – we just want to have a good time, we want to get along, we want to enjoy life and get the most out of it. That’s one of the reasons I do what I do – I like to entertain. If I can maybe add a little joy, maybe I’ve done something worthwhile.”
“But the fact is there are people in this world who get shit on for no other reason than just their identity, the colour of their skin, where they were born, their gender, and that’s fucking bullshit.
You heard it. Sexism, racism, and whatever other types of prejudice are definitely bullshit — not just bullshit, they’re fucking bullshit. I don’t think anyone would disagree with his statement, but the fact that Pitchford is making a game that’s essentially based on degrading women and being awesome while doing so has a tendency to be… misunderstood.
“Now, because of the unfairness in the world, sometimes people get… you know, organizations grow up and they become advocates for those issues, and there’s some very legitimate and worthwhile organizations that are promoting everything from women’s rights to gay rights to racial equality and religious tolerance, which are all really important things for our world.”
“Now, sometimes, an organization that has an agenda and is interested in promoting that, especially when they’re legitimate, worthwhile agendas, they need to find ways to get attention and to help people understand the problem.”
“Sometimes in entertainment, things that people are already aware of are a great opportunity for them to get attention for it. So things like ‘fags’… It’s a stupid videogame. They’re just jokes, and I think everybody gets it.”
So, Pitchford isn’t a sexist, homophobic asshole like Duke. He’s just having fun, which is exactly what games are about. There are certainly some people who take it too far and actually try to behave like they would in-game, but face it – You’ll never be as bad ass, and you’ll never be able to pull it off as well. If you think you can… post pics, I’ll judge.
“His behaviour is not misogynistic, he’s just hedonistic.”
Everyone knows that sex feels good if you’re doing it right. Duke likes to feel good. If it’s really that big of an issue that a fictional character feels better than you do right now, well… You should probably learn to enjoy yourself, Duke Nukem-style.
