Dragon Age 2 – Companion and Gift Location Guide

In Dragon Age 2 players encounter many important characters.  Some friend and some foe.  Others are companions who will join you on your Quest.  Use this guide to find out the “where”, “how” and other important details about the 9 different Dragon Age Companions.

Bethany and Carver

Class: Mage (Bethany), Warrior (Carver)

Recruited: Hawke’s siblings Bethany and Carver both start the game with you.  By the end of the prologue, you’ll lose one of them and then the other will leave at the end of Act 1.

Personality Conflicts:

• Carver - Conflicts with Anders and Merrill during Mage related quests.
• Bethany –Conflicts with Fenris during Mage storylines.

Major Quests: “Birthright”

Armor Upgrades:

• Carver – Fereldan Girded Plating – found in “Birthright”
• Bethany – Heirloom Amell Protective Sigils – found in “Birthright”

Gifts:

• Carver – Tobrius Documents – found in “Birthright”
• Bethany – Portrait of your mother – found in “Birtright”

Aveline

Class: Warrior

Recruited: Mandatory, joins during the prologue. Is able to leave after “The Last Straw”.

Conflicts: Merrill, if you support her during her companion quests.

Major Quests: “The Way it Should Be”, “The Long Road”, “Favor and Fault”.

Armor Upgrades:

• Act 1- Underpadding – Guardsmen Pattern, obtained from the armor stand in Lowtown.
• Act 2 - Impact Plating – Guardsman Pattern, obtained from the armor stand in Lowtown.
• Act 2 - Flex-Chain – Guardsman Pattern, obtained in the quest “Raiders on the Cliffs”.
• Act 3 - Deflecting Joints – Guardsman Pattern, obtained in the quest “Favor and Fault”.

Gifts:

• Act 2 - The Shield of the Knight Herself, received during “Offered and Lost”.

Varric

Class: Rogue

Recruited: At the start of Act 1 and doesn’t leave.

Conflicts: None

Major Quests: “Family Matter”, “Haunted”.

Armor Upgrades:

• Act 1: Inscribed Leather Harness can be bought at Apparel Shop in Lowtown.
• Act 2: Coat Lining with Concealed Pockets can be bought at Shady Merchandise at the Docks.
• Act 2: Silverite-Reinforced Buckles can be found during Quest: “Family Matter”.
• Act 3: Drakeskin Leg Straps can be found during the Quest: “Finding Nathaniel”.

Gifts:

• The Tethras Signet Ring can be found during Act 2 in the Quest: “Trinkets Emporium in Lowtown”.

Anders

Class: Mage

Recruited: Mandatory, toward the end of Act 1 after the “Tranquility” quest. There are several points at which he can leave the party.

Conflicts: Carver, Febris and Sebastian.

Major Quests: “Tranquility”, “Dissent”, “Justice”

Armor Upgrades:

• Act 2: Armor Suits can be bought at Lirene’s Ferelden Imports in Lowtown.
• Act 2: Lyrium Weave can be bought at Mage Goods in Gallows Courtyard.
• Act 2: Spirit Essence can be found during the Quest: “Dissent”.
• Act 3: Sigil of the Mage Underground can be found during the Quest: “Best Served Cold”.

Gifts:

• Tevinter Chantry Amulet can be found in Act 2 during the Quest: “A Bitter Pill”.

Merrill

Class: Mage

Recruited: Complete the “Long Way Home” quest in Act 1. She can leave you during “The Last Straw”.

Conflicts: Fenris and Carver during Mage quests, everyone if you side with her during her companion quests during Acts 2 and 3.

Major Quests: “Long Way Home”, “Mirror Image”, “A New Path”.

Armor Upgrades:

• Act 2: Samite Lining can be bought at Robes by Jean Luc in Hightown.
• Act 2: Carved Ironwood Buttons can be bought at Ilen’s Crafts in Sundermount.
• Act 2: Silver-Threaded Dalish Embroidery during the Quest: “Top of Sundermount”.
• Act 3: Halla Horn Buckles during the Quest: “A New Path”.

Gifts:

• Wooden Halla Carving can be bought in Act 2 at Ilen’s Crafts in Sundermount.
• Sylvanwood Ring will be found on the remains of the Thief Leader in Act 3 during the Quest: “A Murder of Crows”.

Isabela

Class: Rogue

Armor Upgrades:

• Act 2: Rigid Boning can be bought at Apparel Shop in Lowtown.
• Act 2: Supportive Corselet can be bought at Robes by Jean Luc in Hightown.
• Act 2: Lambswool Insoles during the Quest: “To Catch a Thief”.
• Act 3: Boiled Leather Plates during the Quest: “A Murder of Crows”.

Gifts:

• Ship in a Bottle in Act 2 during “Blackpowder Courtesy”.
• Rivaini Talisman in Act 3 during  ”Disused Passage”.

Fenris

Class: Warrior

Recruited: Complete “A Bitter Pill” in Act 1.

Conflicts: Any magic user, including Hawke.

Major Quests: “A Bitter Pill”, “Bait and Switch”, “Alone”

Armor Upgrades:

• Act 2: Tevinter Spirit Symbol can be bought at Robes by Jean Luc in Hightown.
• Act 2: Lyrium Scales can be bought at Shady Merchandise at the Docks.
• Act 2: Reinforced Straps can be found during the Quest: “A Bitter Pill”.
• Act 3: Enchanted Resin can be found during the Quest: “Mine Massacre”.

Gifts:

• The Book of Shartan can be bought in Act 2 at Elven Alienage in Lowtown.
• Blade of Mercy can be found in Act 3 during “Best Served Cold” quest.

Sebastian

Class: Rogue

Recruited: He is optional and can be acquired by buying his downloadable content (DLC) from either the Xbox 360 or PSN Market and then by completing Act 1: Quest: Duty and Act 2: Quest: Repentance.

Conflicts: Anders

Core Companion Quests: “Duty”, “Repentance”, and “Faith”.

Armor Upgrades:

• Act 2: Enchanted Articulation can be bought at Armor Shop at Gallows Courtyard.
• Act 2: Reinforced Bracers can be bought at Olaf’s Armory in Hightown.
• Act 2: Mail Undertunic can be found during the Quest: “Repentance”.
• Act 3: Protection of the Faith can be found during the Quest: “Best Served Cold”.

Gifts:

• Starkhaven Longbow can be found during in Act 2 in Quest: “Repentance”.
