World of Warcraft Goes Free To Play Up To Level 20

The latest title update for World of Warcraft titled “Rage of the Firelands” went live today and completely diminishes the fourteen day trial period. Instead, Blizzard has replaced it by going with the “Free to Play” route.

Before today you only had 14 days to experience the wonderful World of Warcraft, but Blizzard decided to take a new approach by making the game free to play…but only until level 20. At least until you upgrade to the full version. Blizzard’s calling it the World of Warcraft Starter Edition, which even includes some of the content from the game’s first expansion, The Burning Crusade. Free players can create Draenei and Blood Elf characters, two races added in the expansion. Should you decide to upgrade, you can get the core game and Burning Crusade for only $19.99 as part of the digital World of Warcraft Battle Chest.

Pretty good move by Blizzard in my opinion. By the time you manage to reach level 20, you’ll probably be to attached to your character to just throw it all away. Plus you’ll get a good understanding of how much of your life you’ll need to pour into the game if you want get anywhere in the massive world. Of course you’ll have to wait until the site stops being bombarded by newcomers in order to get started.
