Activision Files Complaint Against ModernWarfare3.com

Just a few days ago, video game news sites were abuzz that ModernWarfare3.com redirected to Battlefield 3’s webpage. Many speculated that EA was behind the domain-reserving shenanigans  because of the intense battle that’s heating up for this fall between Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3. Deeper investigation revealed that the Call of Duty troll was in fact not EA, but probably a disgruntled gamer sick of the Call of Duty hype.

Activision, seeing the amount of attention that the domain troll received, was not pleased. So naturally, they filed a complaint against ModernWarfare3.com’s mysterious domain holder, stating that the domain is intentionally similar to Activision’s trademarked product. The Modern Warfare 3 domain-holder didn’t skip a beat. He or she made the eleven-paged complaint open to the public and changed the website to gear it towards trolling Activision and Modern Warfare 3.

Unfortunately, I think the mysterious domain holder is probably going to have ModernWarfare3.com stripped from him. A few years back, a similar incident happened with Keith Malley and Twentieth Century Fox. Malley bought up thesimpsonsmovie.com, knowing that The Simpson’s Movie was going to be released. Instead of buying him off, Twentieth Century Fox filed a complaint and Malley was forced to turn the domain over, because the domain was bought up in “bad faith”.
