Minecraft Hits 3 Million, Bethesda Sics Lawyers On Notch
Minecraft just hit the 3 million copies mark yesterday, according to Notch’s Twitter. Not bad, considering that the game is still in beta. And Minecraft is only going to get bigger from here, as it’s slated to hit the Xbox Live Arcade once it gets out of beta later this year. Expect Minecraft‘s sales to double.
Still, success does have its downside. Just a few hours after announcing the good news regarding Minecraft, Notch tweeted again that Bethesda had slapped some lawyers onto him, stating that Scrolls, Mojang’s upcoming game, infringes upon the Elder Scrolls trademark.
I dunno what you’re thinking Bethesda, but I hardly ever refer to Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim as The Elder Scrolls. I always use their separate names. Even then, I can assure you that (most of) your customers will be able to tell the difference between Mojang’s Scrolls and The Elder Scrolls. “The Elder” part kind of gives it away.
If Mojang wasn’t getting the attention that it is in the gaming world, would Bethesda really care? Nah. Then again, I’m guessing Bethesda’s probably just afraid that they’re going to have to share Google hits with Mojang’s Scrolls, as searching “Scrolls” in the Google search box has Scrolls as the first entry and Bethesda second. Nay, nay! Definitely can’t have that kind of shenanigans going on. Let loose the lawyer hounds upon them. Trademark troll strikes again!
