Team Bondi Packs It Up

Success really does have its downfalls, and Team Bondi is experiencing every single one of them. Since the release of L.A. Noire, Team Bondi’s been swimming in some deep shit.

You’d think that with L.A. Noire‘s success that Team Bondi would be financially golden for at least their next few games. It probably would have been the case had Team Bondi’s management shown some form of competency, which, looking at the slew of bad news surrounding the developer, is obviously not the case.

Video game developers and publishers are often caught in scandals involving terrible working conditions, where employees are subject to obscene amounts of hours a week in crunch time to make games meet deadlines. Employees began speaking out against Team Bondi, complaining about director Brandon McNamara’s tyrannical nature, terrible work hours, and false promises of bonuses.

As more and more was revealed about the poor conditions at Team Bondi during L. A. Noire‘s development cycle, Rockstar revealed that they did not intend to publish Team Bondi’s next game.

Most recently, rumors have leaked that Team Bondi is planning on selling most of its assets and IPs to KMM Games, where much of Team Bondi’s staff has moved, including McNamara. It now seems that Team Bondi is going to be closing its doors, as it is under administration as of Tuesday.

Although it’s sad to see a game company fold, all of this seemed pretty obvious after all the bed press during the last weeks of June and early July. With all of the negativity surrounding Team Bondi,  it’s obvious that no reputable publisher would ever work with them ever again.

Stick close. There’s bound to be more news about Team Bondi’s failure. We’ll keep you updated.

I very much disagree with the “analysis” of this post that it is bad environment and staff churn causing this. Not only is the games industry one where there is ALWAYS another person wanting to be a game developer, you just need to look at EA to see similar issues being raised over time and they still keep going.

What could be the real cause? Cash flow – it can only ever be that. In your post you talk about how they should have bucket loads so there is two thoughts:
    1) The owners are taking the cash and running.
    2) Rockstar published so put up a lot of money to pay the bills while development occured, that needs to be paid back plus Bondi invested HEAVILY into their gimmicky facial scanning system and the cost of having real actors come in for hours to act in it all start to add up. I think they spent big and hit a home run, just not a big enough one to cover the costs and now they closing the doors.
