RipTen Review: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)

Skyward Sword also features many epic bosses and mini-bosses of various sizes.  Some of these fights are really cool and players will want to face off against some of the foes over and over again.  This is possible later on in the game as some players may discover a Boss Attack mode that also serves as a mini game of sorts within the adventure.  There is some great loot for fighting these bosses again, but that’s all I’ll say so I don’t spoil anything!

One more thing to mention about the bosses and mini-bosses is that yes, the motion controls DO still matter here!  Preforming the wrong type of attack against many of the foes won’t work.  Flailing around and hoping to do the right thing could work eventually, but that’s leaving it all up to luck.

As previously mentioned, there are several mini games scattered throughout the land as well.  I won’t go into many details but there is a time trials game, shooting game and sword slicing game, just to name a few.  All of these games offer the player various rewards such as Rupees, treasures, bugs, and the occasional Heart Piece.

There is just so much to do in Zelda: Skyward Sword.  The main quest took me just under 58 hours to get everything and 100% the game.  If that isn’t enough, upon completion of the game a second quest is given to players where damage is doubled, and I hear enemies no longer drop hearts, adding to the replay value and challenge of an already lengthy game!

I may have been vague in this review on a number of things but that is for several reasons.  For starters, I know many fans don’t want the game ruined for them.  Additionally, I feel that the sense of discovery is an important part of the Zelda experience and I don’t want to rob that feeling away from readers because a game as good as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword just doesn’t come out everyday.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is a true achievement in interactive entertainment because it’s one of the most interactive games that I’ve ever played.  When I was a kid I dreamed of a Zelda game controlling the way Skyward Sword does and now the dream is a reality.  Even 10 years ago I didn’t believe a title like this would be released anytime soon.

If you have any doubts in your mind, cast them aside.  Zelda: Skyward Sword is easily the Wii game of the year and may just be the best game on the Wii, period.  It’s arguably the best Zelda game ever made and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is a title that will likely become a timeless classic that will surely be talked about for countless gaming generations to come.

Here’s The Rundown:

+ Best use of motion controls ever
+ A lengthy and exciting quest
+ A solid story that has long reaching implications to the entire Zelda series
+ Several new and exciting gameplay features
+ Many fun minigames
+ A second, more challenging, quest to add to replay value
+ Great dungeons and environmental puzzles

- Annoying to see info on all the collected treasures/bugs each time a game is resumed

If I can play this with classic controls I’ll get it but I am not interested in swinging my arms around in my living room.
