CD Projekt Tells Witcher 2 Pirates to Pay Up

As a game developer, there’s nothing that sucks more than having someone download your game illegally.  Years of your life instantly invalidated because someone thinks they’re entitled to your game for free. After The Witcher 2 was illegally downloaded 4.5 million times, CD Projekt decided that enough was enough.

TorrentFreak is reporting that the developer has sent legal notices to users of BitTorrent in Germany. CD Projekt wants €912 ($1180) to cover the debt their company is in.  Here’s what they’ve got to say:

“As you know, we aren’t huge fans of any sort of DRM here at CD Projekt RED. DRM itself is a pain for legal gamers – the same group of honest people who decided that our game was worth its price, and went and bought it,” CD Projekt RED told Joystiq in a statement. “We don’t want to make their lives more difficult by introducing annoying copy protection systems.”

“However, that shouldn’t be confused with us giving a green light to piracy. We will never approve of it, since it doesn’t only affect us but has a negative impact on the whole game industry. We’ve seen some of the concern online about our efforts to thwart piracy, and we can assure you that we only take legal actions against users who we are 100 percent sure have downloaded our game illegally.”

How have they narrowed down the search, you ask? CD Projekt’s keeping mum on how, but PC Gamer says the super spy tech is developed by an external company. Here’s hoping that they’ve got the right people.

Honestly, the game is great. Just go buy it if you have the means to do so (I say that because I know people in places like Romania who really don’t have the means to pay for games like this, yet still like to play them, to which I am understanding. It’s the snot nosed kids of america whom live on 100x what people in other regions of teh world that complain about game prices and thus pirate that piss me off.)

I wish there was some way I could support CD Projekt without having to buy the game. Its really not my type of game whatsoever(Yes, I did play it). I do however support everything they are doing, because in the end, DRM only hurts the paying customer.
