EA: Origin Will be Good in Two Years’ Time

Are you a PC gamer? If so, chances are you’ve used EA’s Origin service. What’s that? You don’t like it? You think Valve’s Steam platform is better? Well, EA is banking on you changing your mind within two years’ time.

Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore answered a few questions and shared his thoughts on why it’s good that Origin is on the scene to compete with Steam.

Moore revealed that the reason EA decided to pursue Origin was because they felt “the PC business was having a little bit of a renaissance,” and that they want to improve their connection to PC gamers. Origin allows the software giant to interact (read: sell) stuff directly to consumers at their own price and pace.

The former SEGA and Microsoft boss also thinks that Origin is already past its worst criticisms.

It’s quieted down (criticisms on Origin), I don’t think you see the initial level of vitriol. And I’ve been in gaming long enough [that I know that] if you try to add something that’s different and particularly if you add the layer that it’s EA and everything that goes with it

Here’s what Moore has to say on why Origin is good, as opposed to Steam being the de-facto digital platform for PC gaming.

I think it’s healthy for the industry to have more opportunities to go, if you will, to shop around, to find different things that you like, different content. The more stores there are for me in the mall, the more entertaining it is. Sometimes my wife will drag me to a little boutique mall that’s got like eight stores. [groans] I like the gamut. I like choice.

Lastly, Moore knows that not a lot of people are sold on Origin just yet, but he adds, “It’s one of those things where I would ask, give us 18 months to two years. And if we sit here two years from now, start looking at it then.”

Do you agree with his sentiments or do you think EA has bitten off more than they can chew in the Steam vs. Origin title bout?

Well, EA talks too much. They are not doing their job, which is making Origin better and more envolving like Steam is. This is what they are left to do: talk.

What I read fom his speech is: We have two years to figure out if Origin will make profit or not. After that, we are out.

I’m not against competitors for Steam. I’m just really angry because EA is not selling its games on Steam. Put your games on Steam and I will buy it. Simple as that.

BF3 is still selling for $59.99 on Origin…which is same price for the console version despite the fact that there are no licensing fees to produce games for the pc.  Meanwhile MW3 is $40 on Steam.

Guess which platform I’m going to support?
