Rumor: Next Microsoft System Code Named Durango, Sadly Not Canyonero

The internet is abuzz with rumors after Kotaku mentioned Microsoft‘s next console, the successor to the Xbox 360, is being developed under the codename Durango. Considering how little any of us actually know about that future system and its current development, just the mere mention of it is the gamer equivalent of ringing a bell near one of Pavlov’s mutts. Obviously, this isn’t the name the system will launch with, as internal development names are just placeholders. If they weren’t, we would be talking about how much we miss the Sega Katana and how the Nintendo Dolphin was quite underrated in retrospect.
Durango is a number of things, including a SUV, a city and state in Mexico, and the car that gets Alex to the “Singing in the Rain” scene in A Clockwork Orange. I’m going to go out on a limb and assume this particular Durango is named after the city, since the Kinect was code-named after the Brazilian city of Natal, and not the Clockwork Orange thing. Although, that would be awesome.
Still, no matter what, I welcome this rumor even if it ends up being complete bollocks. I’d much rather see my colleagues in the game journalism world calling it the Durango than the nonsensical, illogical, and flat out terrible Xbox 720. If they actually end up calling it that, I’m going to riot. I’d prefer the Xbox Doraemon, the Xbox Durarara, and especially the Xbox Duran Duran to the 720.
Hey, maybe they could call the “Xbox 1080″ the “Rio.” That would make them pretty “Notorious.” They will probably end up calling it “None of the Above” though. What, “Is There Something I Should Know?” Sorry, all these Duran Duran references are making me “Hungry Like the Wolf!” I’m starting to “Come Undone!” Is there “Anyone Out There?” Maybe you should “Save a Prayer” for me so I stop!
