Put Your Hopes of a Rocksteady TMNT Game to Bed – It Isn’t Happening

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Just a few weeks ago, we reported on a rumor about Rocksteady’s possible involvement in a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. Oh, it would have been glorious. Four-player co-op, human foot soldiers instead of robots and the dark, gritty New York that the shell-heads deserve. Even better, the studio’s name is Rocksteady. I mean, how much more perfect could it get?

Ya know the saying, “too good to be true?” Well, you’re living it, dude.

Last week, during the New York Toy Fair, intrepid photographers from ToyArk managed to snap this little gem.

It’s a little hard to see, but down there in blue? That says Activision. In addition to this compelling evidence, we’ve got only the shakiest of assertions from Paul Gale, the gentleman who originally broke the Rocksteady/TMNT rumor, that reveals just how tenuous the whole thing is.

“I have not been able to confirm this game’s validity and that’s why even if I do share the news, it will be listed as a rumor. I normally put up stories if I’ve either seen it with my own eyes or received word from a trusted source affiliated with the project. In this particular case, it’s more along the lines of rumblings and small talk than anything concrete.”

One thought that did cross our minds is that Rocksteady could be developing the game for Activision. Those hopes were squashed when we remembered that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group had purchased a majority stake in the development house two years ago. After the success of Batman: Arkham City, I don’t think they’ll be loaning out their crown jewel any time soon.

If that wasn’t enough, we were reminded that Viacom owns the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license and their own Nickelodeon will be host to the newest iteration of the popular franchise. Viacom and WB are two entertainment giants and it seems highly unlikely that they would ever allow their money, intellectual property or development studios to co-mingle.

So, there you have it. The evidence seems pretty conclusive that Rocksteady is NOT making a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game only slightly less concrete that we should expect to see one from Activision in conjunction with the new CG animated series debuting this fall.

Bummed? Excited? Let us know!
