When Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez mentioned via Twitter that he had a big announcement for last night’s episode of Cross Counter, a live broadcast program that he does with Mike Ross on fighting games and the community, I don’t think any of us expected this. During the show, Ryan announced that he will be leaving Cross Counter and, quite possibly, the fighting game community for a while, in order to pursue other interests and goals.
Now, don’t think for a second that Gootecks is just up and abandoning the scene. The work that he’s done in order to help build up the fighting game scene is massive, which includes starting the Bar Fights tournament series, co-founding Cross Counter (which provides amazing video content of tournaments, as well as a myriad number of videos) and so much more. While the scene is certainly diminished without him, no one can deny that Ryan has put in more work and love than most other people have. On the topic of the future of Cross Counter, Ryan had this to say:
“The bottom line is at this point, it’s become necessary to move into other areas. And the best way for us to expand is to expand into other areas. I feel like the fighting game side of what we do can easily continue. This is not the end of Cross Counter, this is not the end of Cross Counter Live, this is not the end of anything that we do, because all this is going to continue.”
While I’m certainly going to miss Ryan being present in the fighting game community, I certainly wish him the best in all his future endeavors, and thank him for all the work he’s done.
