It seems thatgamecompany has the golden touch. It struck gold when it released flOw to PSN players back in 2007 winning the Best Downloadable Game award at the 2008 Game Developers Choice Awards. It’s spiritual successor – Flower – won the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) Casual Game of the Year” award in 2009; and while it’s too early to tell if the studio’s most recent game release (Journey) can do the same, it’s already a hit commercially.
While Sony has yet to reveal actual sales numbers, it’s quite comforting to see that something without guns and as artsy as Journey can still make an impact commercially – oh, and the fact that it’s also a critical darling helps, too!
With the game sitting atop an astounding 92 average on Metacritic, one wonders if Sony shouldn’t have just bought the company outright to retain exclusivity on its upcoming games. For those who don’t know, Journey will be the last Sony exclusive game from thatgamecompany as it fulfills their agreed-upon three-game contract.
Hopefully, thatgamecompany’s games can continue to amaze regardless of the platform they are released on.
