There have been quite a few rumblings in recent months as people wondered if Crytek was developing Crysis 3.  To put all of the rumors to rest, Crytek announced today that the threequel in the shooter franchise will be releasing in the spring of 2013.

Along with the expectedly vague release window, Crytek revealed a few details about the game and the company’s release plans.  Players will take on the role of series veteran Prophet as he returns to New York City, but this is not the city we know – it has been transformed into the New York City Liberty Dome by the Cell Corporation.  By covering the city in a Nanodome, Cell has created seven different environments known as the Seven Wonders in the city (as if they knew they were creating game levels).

Taking place over 20 years after Crysis 2, the third title in the franchise’s 2047 setting will provide Prophet with a new and improved Nanosuit,  a composite bow, and new alien technology as the protagonist takes on human and alien Ceph threats in his search for a solution to Cell’s sinister plans.

With news of a release window also comes details of preorder bonuses.  Available on Origin.com and with participating retailers, the Crysis 3 Hunter Edition will offer, for $59.99, early multiplayer access to the series’ new bow and its attachments, a Nanosuit module with additional powers and functions, cosmetic additions and a bonus XP boost up to level 5.

The preorder news doesn’t stop there, though unfortunately it includes retailer-specific exclusives.  The Stalker, Overkill, and Predator Packs each offer unique weapons and skins to be used in multiplayer, which, according to Crytek, are:

  • Stalker Pack – Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: for players who like to stalk their prey from the shadows the Stalker Pack provides early multiplayer access to the deadly semi-auto Jackal shotgun. This powerful, close-range shotgun comes with a unique silencer attachment, custom weapon skin and two exclusive themed in-game dog tags.
  • Overkill Pack – Includes the base game, all Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: the Overkill Pack features early multiplayer access to the Typhoon assault weapon and skin. Spewing 500 rounds a second, the Typhoon gives players the ability to go guns blazing to take back the Liberty Dome. Also included are two exclusive Overkill themed in-game dog tags.
  • Predator Pack – Includes the base game, all the Hunter Edition content and the following early multiplayer unlocks: the Predator Pack delivers early multiplayer access to the Feline submachine gun and exclusive camo. With an extremely fast rate of fire and a 60 round magazine the Feline is highly effective and deadly, at short range.

Crytek’s official site has all the information you can expect in an initial press release, and while not much is offered, we can likely expect more coverage of the game during E3 and the many other yearly industry events to come.
