To complement the announcement of Persona 4 Golden for PlayStation Vita, Atlus has also released new screenshots and the first tutorial trailer for Persona 4 Arena. The fighting game is a departure for Atlus, and as such, they are bringing in anime fighting masters Arc System Works to handle the technical side of things.
The game brings together characters from Persona 3, including Aigis, Mitsuru and Akihiko, along with members of the Investigation Team from Persona 4. If you haven’t played either of those games, you should grab yourself one of the versions of Persona 3 (either the FES version originally released on PS2 and now available via PSN) or Persona 3 Portable on the PSP and Vita (also available on the PSN). Persona 4 is currently only available on the PlayStation 2, but will be coming to the Vita later this year.
Take a look at this brand new video to get a feel for what it will be like to take direct control of your Personas. The combat seems very accessible, mixing in deeper strategies with All-Out Attacks (a callback to the RPG entries in the series), a low-HP state that opens up new attacks and buttons for both your human and Persona attacks. When the game was announced, it seemed like a stretch. Watching it in action, though, makes me very excited to see what Atlus has in store, especially for the story mode.
By the way, does anyone else think that Teddi, the host in the trailer, sounds just a bit like Professor Genki from Saints Row: The Third?
Persona 4 Arena arrives this summer for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
