LOTR MOBA on XBLA, PSN. Depending on where your interests lie, this is either a baffling arrangement of letters, or something to look forward to this fall. If you’re not inclined to decipher the acronyms (and I wouldn’t blame you), I’ll go ahead and tell you what it means: a Lord of the Rings themed multiplayer online battle arena is in development for Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network.

While there hasn’t been a lot of information released, we do know that the game will be titled Guardians of Middle-Earth, and up to ten players split into teams of five will challenge each other. Heroes will be modeled after characters from the LotR franchise such as Gandalf, Gollum, and Sauron.

It’s also known that that the game will be developed by Monolith Productions- the same company that’s known for such popular games as the F.E.A.R. series, both Condemned titles, Aliens vs. Predator 2, and- most recently- Gotham City Imposters. While the MOBA genre isn’t entirely new to consoles- Awesomenauts and Monday Night Combat come to mind- both of those titles had to approach the form in different ways- the former using a 2D side-scrolling view and the latter being played as a third-person shooter. How the developer known for making excellent FPSs will frame their game remains to be seen. That being said, knowing that the company has a history of making pretty great games is reason enough to be interested, even if you’re not someone who’s particularly fond of the LotR aesthetic being placed on top of the whole thing.
