I’ve always been more of a Marvel guy than a DC fan, but with Rocksteady’s amazing take on the Caped Crusader’s Arkham adventures and an enjoyable experience with DC Universe Online, I’m warming to the house that Superman built. However, I’ve always had a problem with the power balance of some of the principal characters. Putting more than a couple in the same game hasn’t really worked and Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe wasn’t the best showing for either side of that conflict. NetherRealm Studios is giving Superheroes another shot, though, and from what we know of Warner Bros. Interactive’s recently announced Injustice: Gods Among Us, this time is going to be a lot different.

After the outstanding reboot of Mortal Kombat, I’m thrilled to see Ed Boon and company apply what they’ve learned to make a hard-hitting, no holds barred super-powered fighting game. While we don’t expect DC’s rules against killing heroes to be bent despite this new take on the DC landscape, it doesn’t mean there won’t be brutal hits and unadulterated violence. You can check out the trailer and screenshots below.

The gritty, dark and armored versions of brand stalwarts appear similar to the versions featured in the opening movie of DCUO, but instead of simply going at it with the villains, they’re fighting each other. Sure, there are some baddies present, including a ticked off Solomon Grundy and a gun-toting Harley Quinn, but the real action is when the “good guys” start pounding each other into space.

We expect to have more news on this from E3 next week. For now, though, I wouldn’t expect Superman to save you.
