Like many a great video game hero, Isaac Clarke just can’t seem to catch a break. You wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that the long-suffering protagonist in Dead Space, the popular survival horror series from Electronic Arts (EA) and Visceral Games, has earned himself a nice beach holiday by now. However, EA has just officially announced Dead Space 3 at their pre-E3 press conference, and this new installment promises to send Isaac to places far less hospitable.
With Dead Space 2 ending on a dramatic note, it’s no surprise that Clarke is still dedicated to finding the source of the Necromorph infestation and eradicating them for good. The game begins with Isaac crash-landing on a planet called Tau Volantis, a desolate planet covered in snow and ice, and he soon discovers that this planet is also swarming with Necromorphs and other monsters. However, he also discovers that this planet might also hold the key to stopping their infestation once and for all, so the long, hard battle for answers begins. The finer details of the story were not revealed in the presentation, however these should be known as we get closer to launch.
The harsh, frozen climate in Dead Space 3 is a welcome change of scenery that opens up plenty of new possibilities, however the developers promise the same dark, intense corridor shooting action that fans of the first two games have come to expect. The new gameplay addition is the ability to play the entire game cooperatively with a friend online, and this is aided by a “drop-in, drop-out” feature that allows players to quickly and easily join games. Those who take advantage of the co-op gameplay will also experience different story elements and gameplay mechanics exclusive to this mode.
Needless to say, this is a good day for any Dead Space fan. The target release date is February 2013 on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. More information on Dead Space 3 will be posted as it becomes available.
