Microsoft’s E3 press conference brought us the announcement of a 6th title in the Splinter Cell series. Splinter Cell: Blacklist is set for a Spring 2013 release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This installment will be handled by Ubisoft‘s new Toronto based crew with help from Ubisoft Shanghai and Montreal as needed.
Today’s video showed an undercover Sam Fisher taking down those known as “The Blacklist”. This evil group is comprised of nations that no longer appreciate our presence and think by threatening attacks, we will withdraw from their soil. As we know Sam does not roll like that and the video confirmed a lot of stealthy butt kicking to boot.
Microsoft in keeping with their “Everything is better with Kinect” attitude has added in game functionality by way of distraction as the video showed. You can speak something out loud to distract the enemy in game. I can already see my wife appreciating all the creative ways I will garner a terrorist’s interest, with curse words of course. There was no other Kinect functionality shown outside of the distraction trick, but that does not mean something will not be added before next spring.
Michael Ironside will not be making the return voicing our beloved hero for the 6th game. Eric Johnson will now play the part of gravel voiced man of darkness in both voice and motion capture. Being a fan of Mr. Ironside (Starship Troopers FTW!) I was a little bummed to hear he would not be making the return as Sam.
I loved Splinter Cell: Conviction and Blacklist looks to carry that same dark and gritty vibe that the last one got so right. So here is to hoping the 6th game in this series holds the same high marks as those before it.
