Bethesda may be busy putting the finishing polish on “Dawnguard”, the first DLC pack for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but this doesn’t mean that they don’t have anything else on offer this year. One of the highlight trailers of E3 2012 was for Dishonored, an upcoming first-person stealth action game published by Bethesda and developed by Arkane Studios, which combines Neo-Victorian design with Steampunk story elements. For those who are fans of the first-person, open-world games that Bethesda has provided before, this game is an intriguing proposition.
The story of Dishonored follows the standard conspiracy and revenge, in which the main character, former bodyguard Corvo Atano, is framed for the assassination of the Empress and must hunt down the parties responsible and clear his name. The game is set in an open-world environment that is fashioned after Victorian England but is teaming with Steampunk-esque enemies. When it comes to combat, first-person melee combat with swords, daggers and occasional firearms is the order of the day. Supernatural abilities such as freezing time and summoning plagued animals to attack your enemies round out your skill sets. The game is focused largely on stealth action and the trailer shows off plenty of fancy swordplay that will be employed during the game.
The trailer also has stylized nods to Bioshock, which seems fitting because Arkane Studios was involved in the development of Bioshock 2. The ambient, almost lullaby-like music contrasts with the copious amounts of blood and carnage seen in the visuals, and the stylish, well-designed scenery lets you know that the open world experience will be a notable highlight. Whether it will be as well-received as other Bethesda titles of late is something that remains to be seen, but the trailer certainly pushes the hype forward in a positive manner.
Dishonored is scheduled for release on October 9, 2012 in North America, with the European release scheduled for October 12, 2012. The game will be available on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. To view the launch trailer, check out the video link below.
